A state panel on public employment relations now says former Yakima police chief Sam Granato did not discriminate against a Yakima police officer, reversing a ruling made two years ago.

The three officers were demanding a total of $9,000,000 for claims of job and sex discrimination as well as sexual harassment. The settlement is roughly two percent of that figure. The money will come from both the city's risk management account and its insurance company.

After seven years as the Yakima Police Department's Chief, Sam Granato's time is done. The City Council thanked him for his service at Tuesday night’s meeting. They highlighted his success in establishing gang units and beefing up patrols. Granato tells us his resignation is bittersweet, and he’s leaving with very fond memories.

As KIMA was the first to report Wednesday, Yakima police chief, Sam Granato is leaving Yakima after seven years. His tenure has been rocky to say the least. KIMA wanted to know whether Granato is leaving us with a community that's safer now than when he arrived back in 2003.

Plans to put more officers on the street have changed. Yakima Police expected to use stimulus money to hire seven-new officers. But KIMA learned that number has changed. And the department had to use some of the money just to keep the people they have. Which means we won't see all those new cops on the streets -- despite the need.

When Yakima City Manager, Dick Zais finally gave council a date that would end his 31 year tenure, there were those cringing at the thought of finding a suitable replacement. And then there were those popping corks, glad the city could finally move on. Love him or hate him, Zais knows Yakima as...more well as anyone. What KIMA wanted to know, is where this politician's politician thinks we're headed now.

That six-figure salary for a crime analyst at YPD had City Council asking a lot of questions. Council may have gotten its questions answered, but we haven't. Action News wanted to know where a crime analyst on the books for 110-thousand dollars fits into a city that's 3-million dollars in the hole.
